George Washington and His Family

MasterM
Seriously, who is going to know
"Commercial centre of Mongolia (5)?"
MrM
That is easy...Ulan Bator.
Right, what about:
"City midway between Detroit and Chicago (9)"
MasterM
That would be Ohiohioio
MrM
Here is one for you, MrsM:
"Short-tailed oceanic bird (6)
beginning with F.
MasterM
Feline.
MrM
Idiot boy - it says "bird"
and in case you hadn't noticed
cats have long tails.
MrsM
Fulmar.
MrM
Good Heavens, it fits!
You are on a roll...what about:
"Garden feature suitable for alpine plants (7)"
MrsM
Rockery
MasterM
I always wondered what the point of rockeries was.
Now I think I know who will get this one...
"Artificial device used to resolve plot
in an artistic work (4,2,7)"
MissM
Deus ex machina.
A respectful silence falls.

Love this! Unfortunately for Master M, for whom I have the utmost respect, since he has traveled more in his much shorter life than I probably ever shall, Ohio is a state, not a city, as I'm sure he knows, based on his answer... =) and the answer to that one is Fort Wayne (Indiana) which is ridiculous, no one would ever know that, even the people FROM there. =) And thus endeth that ridiculously long sentence.
ReplyDeleteGlen Miller's got a gal there ...
ReplyDeleteYou go MissM!
ReplyDeleteWe all know when we have been trounced!
ReplyDeleteMissM did that with an audience!! Impressive! I find that my most surprisingly-knowledgeable moments (for instance during University Challenge) invariably occur when I'm alone.
ReplyDeleteAll that education is paying dividends.
ReplyDeleteOh. They are such bright whippersnappers!
ReplyDeleteGulp!
ReplyDeleteWhat an erudite bunch. We reached our pinnacle of knowledge at the school quiz night on Friday, when we correctly identified Carol Vorderman as this year's 'Rear of the Year' winner. See, there are benefits to reading the Metro.
ReplyDeletesounds like everybody is home for once, good for you. you must be in mother's-heaven.
ReplyDeleteso what did you bake...
by the way...anonymous, i heard she was a real pip-a-roo...
ReplyDeleteI am ful of respect for Miss M as I have no idea what it means and am off to google it. But I feel I ought to tell you about the time when I was watching University Challenge with my husband (B.Sc Chem Dip Cons UkIC)
ReplyDeleteand I answered (correctly) 'covalent bonds' to a question. When I tell you I did general science at O level and just scraped through, you will be as amazed as I was.
I suspect that the city between Detroit and Michigan is actually Kalamazoo (somewhat closer to halfway as the crow flies) and you'd have to have a pretty strange route for Fort Wayne to be halfway....
ReplyDeleteHope you're all enjoying your trip.
