Aunty Alice made a picnicfor the Little Boy Cousins...
she chose special picnic boxes
and filled them
with sweet green grapes,
a tiny box of raisins,
miniature biscuits
and one enormous strawberry...
she had so much fun
packing the little boxes
and watching them being enjoyed
that she realised how long it is
since she last made a carpet picnic.
Too long.

Ahhhh! Lovely post.
I know that feeling! I am just waiting for grandchildren, which rather perturbs my boys if I mention it, seeing as they are not out of university yet . . . I have found that a puppy is quite a good outlet for some of those maternal urges, and I will surely end up with a complete pack of them.

I saw those very same little sandwich boxes and had a total urge to pop them in my trolley. Sadly, I could find no excuse to purchase them.
Must make friends with more small children.
I go with Pomona. I am in that gap between grown up children and the patter of little feet again. So what did we do, we got a dog. He lets me cuddle him senseless, yearnings staved off for now.

I was able to borrow someone's 3 year old nephew recently. I'd forgotten about the refreshingly off the wall conversations you can have. wv beabledom. That's where I was!
Small people are my absolute favourite and best for just the reasons that everyone enumerates.

We have moved from carpet picnics to afternoon teas, but I bet my two wouldn't turn down those sandwich boxes!

We have two occasional small visitors but not quite old enough for picnics yet - can't wait for them to grow a bit! Not counting on any grandchildren so I have to borrow where I can...

We had a tea party the other day with a little girl aged 2. Nothing sweeter than seeing your 'oh so cool' 11 year old sipping pretend tea and eating pretend sandwich & cake.
