walking with my mother

Look at this patch of violets!
You absolutely must take a picture.

Aren’t the milkmaids lovely this year?
I think that you call them something else...
but I always call them milkmaids.
There is a drift of them on the other side of the river.

A whole clump of buttercups!
What a shame that the light is so poor.

This is bugloss...
I am going to take some for my friend Rosalie
who is in hospital...so that she can paint them
It is so difficult to get the exact shade of blue.

I always call this Ragged Robin
but their name is really Herb Robert.
Ragged Robin is really quite different...
I will show you in the book.

This is Archangel
which is like Germander
but isn't the same.

Isn't the wild garlic spectacular this year...
do people really eat it now?
How interesting...

Just a moment, I think I can see an orchid
and I want to check if it is flowering.

*****

I thought that it would be easy to capture
the sound of my mother talking
but I was wrong.
I will have to listen harder next time.

  2. thank you for this beautiful walk with your mother.
you have captured, perhaps not her voice that you remember, but a very special moment. one saved in time, that will be remembered, cherished.

    thank you thank you.

i do so miss walks with my mother - to be able to share them with someone else's mother is so special.

  4. See, you wouldn't have dragged my mother out of that wild garlic patch. Greed is evidently hereditary!
As is gentle wisdom willingly shared.

  6. Please thank your mother for supplying the name bugloss. We have masses of it in the garden but I couldn't for the life of me remember its name. We've been enjoying the wild garlic too, especially in risotto!
My mother loved the forget me knots at this time of year. I'm finding it hard to remember her voice now.

  8. Always wanted to know what that blue flower was - bugloss. We had masses in our old garden. This is such a lovely post, Alice. Thank you.

  9. Ii was harvesting some wild garlic only the other day. I found it whilst leaping out of the car in a secluded spot for a "comfort break"! I consider that luck rather than bad management.

  10. Take a picture of the violets for me Alice, your pictures are always the loveliest.
Call the milkmaids whatever you wish dear one, but aren't they so abundant and lovely?
My friend needs cheering, I will bring her some bugloss and she can work her blues out with her paints.
I want to teach you, show you, be with you.
Somethings can be equally lovely tho' quite different.
Eat wild garlic? I'll feast with my eyes, thank you anyway.
There is always more beauty in the world, my precious daughter.

Alice, I was able to hear your Mother's voice quite clearly. Thank you for sharing, I so needed a fix of Mother Love this morning.
