MrM and MrsM, Birders

MrM and MrsM are walking beside the vlei, a freshwater lagoon

MrsM
What is that bird?
MrM
It is medium sized. And grey.
MrsM
Oh dear, I can't find it in the book...
well, what is that other bird?
MrM
It is quite smart.
It has red bits.
MrsM
I don't think you are trying very hard
What is that bird?
MrM
It is an LBJ
MrsM
Oh really? What does that mean?
MrM
'Little Brown Job'
It is a technical term.
Look at those birds on the water...
MrsM
Do you know what they are?
MrM
Yes. They are idle.
Very Idle Birds.
MrsM
We are not very good at this, are we?

this post is for my friend, Reader's Guide, who is a proper birder.

  1. It's like when they ask me "whose (item) are you wearing?" and I reply "mine".
    I'm very much like MrM.

  2. but I do know a pelican when I see one ...

By the way I liked the words in the delicatessen at Tokara which went: "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it needs more time in the oven !" Don't think South Africans are particularly sentimental types

  5. We go to a birdwatching place quite a lot and I'm absolutely rubbish at it. And I don't seem to have any ability to remember stuff any more either. I think my brain must be full.

As MrM notes, those last ones are pelicans. But I've no idea what the first one is -- what an interesting bird! (I like birding because it provides an excuse to stop, a lot.)
