footnote

I would like to thank
my mother-in-law, Audrey Christie,
for telling me these stories about
her maternal and paternal family
and allowing me to publish them.

I have used a verbatim format because
I hope that MasterM and MissM
will recognise Granny's voice,
each nuance so familiar to them
but so extraordinary to an outsider.

  5. The bit I always remember is the need to travel with two pairs of white gloves on the train. One to wear during the journey and the other to change into when one arrived at one's destination.

The other bit was about "spacers" - people who tried to ensure that couples did not dance too close together.

    Different world ...

  7. Alice, the voice of these family histories has been utterly compelling and fascinating to read. Each one felt like it could be developed into its own short story. Thank you for sharing. Aliwhale
